Why this combination works
Butrint is one of Albania's most important archaeological sites — a UNESCO-listed complex of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman ruins on a peninsula surrounded by water. Ksamil is 15 minutes north — a chain of tiny islands and beaches with water so clear you can see fish 5 meters down.
Doing both in one day gives you culture in the morning (when it's cool enough to walk ruins) and beach in the afternoon (when the sun is high). It's the most popular day trip in southern Albania for a reason.
The itinerary at a glance
- 08:30 — Leave Saranda
- 09:00 — Arrive Butrint, explore 3–4 hours
- 13:00 — Lunch nearby (Ksamil or a taverna en route)
- 14:30 — Ksamil beaches, swim & relax
- 18:00 — Return to Saranda (or continue elsewhere)
Total driving: 30 km round trip. Total cost per person: ~€25 (entry fees + parking + lunch).
Butrint: what to know
Entry: 1,000 lek (~€10) for adults, free under 18. Tickets bought at the entrance.
Hours: 08:00–19:00 in summer, 09:00–16:00 in winter. Arrive early to beat both heat and tour buses (which start arriving 10:00).
Duration: 2–4 hours depending on your pace. Complete circuit takes ~2 hours walking + reading signs.
Wear: Comfortable walking shoes (uneven stones), hat, water. Bring bug spray in summer — mosquitoes near the lake.
The main sights (in walking order)
- The Theatre (3rd century BC Greek) — best-preserved feature, still used for summer concerts
- The Baptistery (6th century Byzantine) — spectacular mosaic floor, often covered for protection
- The Basilica — early Christian church ruins
- The Lion Gate — massive stone relief carving
- The Venetian Tower — climb for views over the lake
- The Museum (in the acropolis) — small but excellent collection of statues and artifacts
Practical Butrint tips
- Ferry crossing: The road to Butrint ends at a small ferry that crosses the Vivari Channel (€1 per car, runs every 15 min). Alternative: park before the ferry and walk in (10 min).
- Guides: Local guides at the entrance charge €25–€35 for 2 hours. Worth it for context if you're into archaeology.
- Combined ticket: €15 ticket includes Butrint + Lekursi Castle in Saranda.
Ksamil: choosing the right beach
Ksamil has 4 small islands offshore and multiple beach areas along the coast. Not all are equal.
The 4 islands
The two closest islands are 50m offshore — reachable by swimming or by paddle boat (€3–€5 rental). Two more are further out (10–15 min swim). Water is 22–26°C in July–September.
The mainland beaches (from north to south)
Pasqyra beach — the classic Ksamil shot with beach clubs, umbrellas, cafes. Most crowded but most facilities.
Bora Bora beach — quieter alternative, still with beach club rentals.
Manastiri beach — furthest south, smallest, quietest.
Wild coves (Gjipeja) — 15 min drive north, mostly empty, no facilities. Bring your own water.
Where to eat
Between Butrint and Ksamil:
- Livia Restaurant (Butrint area) — grilled seafood, honest prices, tourist-friendly menu
- Guvat Restaurant — meat-heavy, good local cheeses
In Ksamil:
- Ksamil Beach Club — average food, great location for a late lunch by the water
- Poseidon — best seafood in Ksamil, book ahead in summer
- Any beach club taverna — you'll pay 30% more but eat with your feet in sand
Budget: €15–€25 per person for a proper Albanian meal with wine.
Parking
Butrint: Free parking at the entrance (before the ferry) or paid parking on the peninsula (€2–€3).
Ksamil: Beach club parking usually free for customers. Street parking free but full by 11:00 in July–August. Municipal parking available for €1–€2/hour.
Cross-country combinations
Coming from Saranda: Easy — 30 min drive south on the SH8. This is the standard day trip.
Coming from Tirana (long day): 4.5 hours drive each way — brutal but doable. Start at 06:00, plan to arrive Saranda area by 11:00, spend 2 hours at Butrint + 2 hours at Ksamil, drive back. Better: stay overnight in Saranda.
Coming from Vlora: 3 hours each way via the Riviera coast. Beautiful drive, but too far for a proper day trip. Consider a 2-day trip staying in Saranda.
Coming from Corfu (Greece): Take the morning ferry (30 min crossing, €19-€29 return). Rent a car in Saranda port. Do Butrint + Ksamil, return to Corfu on evening ferry. Very doable.
The verdict
If you have one day in southern Albania, do this trip. If you have two days, add sunset at Lekursi Castle in Saranda and dinner in the old town for the evening between. If you have three, spend a slow morning in the Butrint peninsula, do Ksamil relaxed, and drive to Himara or Dhërmi via the coastal road on day 3.
What car do you need?
Any standard car handles this trip. The roads are all paved and in reasonable shape. Manual or automatic doesn't matter — no serious hill climbs.
If you're combining with the Albanian Riviera route north (Himara, Dhërmi, Llogara Pass), consider a slightly larger car for comfort on the mountain sections.
