The 12 best beaches in Albania (and how to reach them) — 2026

From the turquoise islets of Ksamil to the hidden pebble coves of the Ionian coast, here are Albania’s best beaches — what makes each special, when to go, and why most of the best ones need a car to reach.

Albania’s beaches, explained

Albania has quietly become one of the Mediterranean’s best-value beach destinations — the same clear Ionian water as neighbouring Greece and Italy, at a fraction of the price and the crowds. The coast splits into two characters: the Adriatic in the north (long, sandy, shallow, family-friendly) and the Ionian Riviera in the south (pebbly coves, dramatic mountains, and that famous turquoise blue).

The one thing almost every great beach has in common: it’s much easier to reach with your own car. Here are the twelve worth planning a trip around.

The Ionian Riviera (south) — the turquoise coast

1. Ksamil

The postcard. Tiny islands you can swim or wade to, and the most photographed water in Albania. Busy in July–August — arrive early or late — but it earns the hype. Right next to Butrint, so pair them.

2. Dhërmi

The Riviera’s liveliest beach: clear water, beach clubs, a summer party scene, and a long stretch of white pebbles. Neighbouring Drymades is the calmer sibling next door.

3. Gjipe Beach

A hidden gem reached by a short hike (or boat) down a canyon between Dhërmi and Himara. The walk keeps the crowds away; the cove at the end — cliffs, blue water, a tiny stretch of sand — is pure reward. Park at the top and walk down.

4. Himara town beach & coves

Himara has an easy town beach plus a string of quieter coves within a few minutes’ drive — Livadhi, Llamani, and others. A great base for beach-hopping.

5. Porto Palermo

A near-enclosed bay with a small castle on a spit of land. Calm, photogenic, and far less crowded than the big-name beaches.

6. Borsh

The longest beach on the Riviera, backed by olive groves and refreshingly uncommercial. Space to breathe even in summer.

7. Pasqyra (Mirror Beach)

A small, stunning cove just north of Saranda, named for its glassy clear water. Compact and popular — go early.

The Adriatic coast (north & centro) — sand and space

8. Gjenëri & Divjaka–Karavasta

Long wild sandy beaches inside a national park, backed by a lagoon famous for flamingos. A different, quieter Albania — nature over nightlife.

9. Durrës

The country’s biggest, most accessible beach strip — long, sandy, shallow, and just 30 minutes from Tirana. Not the prettiest, but perfect for a quick, easy sea day near the capital.

10. Golem & Mali i Robit

South of Durrës, a run of sandy family beaches with shallow water and plenty of resorts — an easy option if you’re based near Tirana.

Beaches worth the detour

11. Kakome Bay

A wild, undeveloped bay south of Saranda, reached by a rough track — which is exactly why it stays pristine. Best with a higher-clearance car.

12. Grama Bay

Remote and spectacular, accessible mainly by boat or a serious hike, with ancient inscriptions carved into the rock by sailors over centuries. For the adventurous.

When to go

  • June & September: the sweet spot — warm sea, sunshine, far fewer people.
  • July & August: peak. The water’s perfect but Ksamil and Dhërmi get crowded; visit early morning or late afternoon.
  • May & October: quieter and cheaper; the sea is swimmable for the hardy and the light is beautiful.

Why a car makes the difference

Most of Albania’s best beaches — Gjipe, Kakome, the Himara coves, the hidden stretches of the Riviera — have no bus service, or one so limited it dictates your whole day. With a rental car you reach the cove you want, at the hour the light is best, and move on when you’re ready. It’s the difference between seeing two beaches and seeing ten.
