Rent a car in Tirana or Saranda: which is better for your trip?

Prices, availability, one-way rules, and route logic explained. Pick the right pickup city and save money on your Albanian road trip.

The 30-second answer

  • Coming into Tirana airport (TIA) or Durrës port: Rent in Tirana.
  • Coming from Corfu ferry or flying to Corfu → ferry: Rent in Saranda.
  • Doing a Riviera-only trip: Rent in Saranda.
  • Doing a north Albania or all-Albania trip: Rent in Tirana.

The rest of this article explains why, with prices, logistics, and edge cases.

Prices — the raw comparison

CategoryTirana avg/daySaranda avg/dayNotes
Economy manual€30–€40€40–€55Saranda 30% more expensive
Compact automatic€50–€70€60–€85Saranda 20% more expensive
SUV€65–€90€75–€105Similar difference
One-way surcharge (return in other city)€30–€60€30–€60Both charge similar

Why Saranda is more expensive:

  • Smaller fleet (fewer suppliers)
  • Higher tourist demand relative to supply in summer
  • More seasonal availability (many suppliers close in winter)

Availability

Tirana Airport (TIA): 3+ rental companies operating year-round, 100+ cars typical fleet across suppliers. Booking 1 week ahead usually fine.

Saranda: 2–3 suppliers operating year-round, ~30–40 cars total. Book 2+ weeks ahead in summer, or you'll pay premium prices for what's left.

One-way rentals — the real story

You can rent in one city and return in another. Common combinations:

Tirana → Saranda: €30–€50 fee. Common, easily arranged.

Saranda → Tirana: €30–€50 fee. Same as above but reverse direction.

Tirana → Corfu (Greece): Not allowed. You'd have to leave the car in Saranda and take the ferry as a foot passenger.

Corfu → Albania: Not directly. Rent a car in Saranda after taking the ferry.

When one-way makes sense:

  • Doing a linear trip (not returning to your origin)
  • Flying in one city, out another
  • Combining Albania with a ferry to Corfu at the end

When one-way doesn't make sense:

  • 3-day trips (the €40 fee is 30% of your rental cost)
  • Loop trips (why pay one-way when you're returning anyway?)

Route-based decision tree

Doing the "grand loop" (Tirana → Berat → Gjirokastra → Saranda → Vlora → back to Tirana)

Rent in Tirana. Return in Tirana. The €40 you'd save on one-way ends up costing you more in accommodation logistics.

Only the south (Butrint, Ksamil, Saranda-based)

Rent in Saranda. You avoid the 5-hour drive from Tirana that you'd only use for pickup.

Only the north (Shkodra, Theth, Valbona)

Rent in Tirana. No good rental infrastructure in the north (Shkodra has 1–2 suppliers, limited fleet).

Flying into Tirana, ferry out to Corfu

Rent in Tirana, drop in Saranda one-way (€40). Best of both worlds.

Flying into Tirana, flying out of Tirana

Rent in Tirana loop. Simple, cheap, no one-way fees.

The Saranda seasonal problem

Saranda's rental market is heavily seasonal. In peak summer (July–August), prices spike 60–80% above spring prices. Availability is tight — some travellers arrive at the port and find nothing available.

Solution: Book online 3+ weeks ahead, especially for compact automatic or SUV cars.

In shoulder season (May, September, October), Saranda rentals are actually cheaper than Tirana per-day because tourist competition drops but tenants keep operating.

Ferry to Corfu — special considerations

If you're taking the Saranda → Corfu ferry (30 min crossing), understand:

  • You cannot take an Albanian rental car to Corfu on the ferry. Cross-border to Greece is allowed for renters, but the ferry to a specific EU port has separate insurance rules.
  • Park your rental in Saranda: Municipal parking near the port charges €5/day. Some hotels offer parking if you're staying.
  • Take the ferry as foot passenger: €19–€29 return. Buy tickets at the port or online at Ionian Cruises.

What about Vlora, Durrës, Berat?

Vlora: 1–2 suppliers, similar to Saranda availability. Good for pickup if you're focused on the Riviera and want to avoid Tirana traffic.

Durrës port: 2–3 suppliers, competitive prices similar to Tirana. Ideal for ferry arrivals from Italy.

Berat: No dedicated rental locations. You'd have to arrange delivery from Tirana (~€40 delivery fee).

The bottom line

For 90% of travellers, the answer is:

  • Landing in Tirana Airport: Rent in Tirana. Do a loop back.
  • Landing in Saranda (via Corfu ferry): Rent in Saranda. Return to Saranda before your ferry back.

The €40 you save by not doing one-way is usually not worth the accommodation logistics.
