Tirana Airport (TIA) at a glance

The trap to avoid: walking up to a counter in the arrivals hall without a booking and taking whatever is offered. Opening hours and late arrivals
Many flights into Tirana land late at night or very early in the morning. - Check the fuel level and confirm the fuel policy (full-to-full is fairest — you get it full, return it full).
- Test the basics: lights, indicators, wipers, air conditioning, and that the spare tyre and jack are present.
- Confirm the paperwork: the rental agreement, the insurance documents, and — critically — the green card if you plan to cross any border.
- Get the emergency number for the supplier in case of a breakdown.

Once you have the keys, the airport road connects quickly to Albania's main routes:

- To Shkodra and the north (Theth, Valbona): ~1h30 to Shkodra, then mountain roads.
- To the south (Berat, Vlora, Saranda, Ksamil): the SH4 highway takes you most of the way; Saranda is roughly a 3.5–4 hour drive.
